Prepare for Tropical Storm Gordon by reviewing homeowners insurance

Tropical Storm Gordon is moving quickly and gaining force. Gordon is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on the Gulf Coast.

A homeowners insurance policy more than likely has a hurricane deductible. It ranges from one to five percent of the insured value of the property.

Most homeowner policies cover wind and hail damage but typically exclude flood damage. Flood insurance can be purchased through the Federal National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurance provider.

Even if a person rents, they still need coverage for their belongings. The homeowners insurance on the property will only insure the building, not the renters belongings. A renter can purchase a renters insurance policy to protect their belongings from natural disasters.

Do not wait until last minute to purchase insurance, some policies take up to a few weeks to take effect.
